Iouri Podladtchikov - Action

Winter X-Games XVII kicks off on 23 January, commencing a five day festival of elite snowboarding and freeskiing. The world's best and brightest snowboarders and freeskiers will descend on Aspen, Colorado once more to do battle for one of the top prizes in their sport.

The principal events are Slopestyle, Superpipe and Big Air and MPORA has assembled this guide to accompany your viewing, explaining when, how and who will be competing and how you can catch the action.

When?: Men's final on Friday 24 January.

Where?: 300ft course with a single 80ft step up jump.

Who?: Torstein Horgmo (2013 Gold), Halldor Helgason, Yuki Kadono, Sage Kotsenburg, Mark McMorris, Max Parrot, Stale Sandbech, Seppe Smits, Sven Thorgren, Seb Toutant.

Format: Two heats of five compete in a 15 minute jam. Top three from each heat advance to a six man final where another 18 minute jam determines the winners.

Scoring: Top two scores from each jam are counted and measured out of 100.

When?: Men's elimination takes place on Thursday 23 January. Women's final on Saturday 25 January, men's finals on Sunday 26 January.

Where?: Superpipe 567ft long, 66ft wide and with walls 22ft high.

Men: Shaun White (2013 Gold), Ryo Aono, Greg Bretz, Danny Davis, Ben Ferguson, Taylor Gold, Christian Haller, Ayumu Hirano, Taku Hiraoka, Kazuhiro Kokubo, Scotty Lago, Arthur Longo, Markus Malin, Iouri Podladtchikov, Louie Vito, Zhang Yiwei.

Women: Kelly Clark (2013 Gold), Gretchen Bleiler, Torah Bright, Queralt Castellet, Kaitlyn Farrington, Arielle Gold, Elena Hight, Chloe Kim.

Format: Preliminary elimination round in which each rider gets two runs on the course. Eight best progress to the final where riders get three runs. The Women's competition goes straight to the final.

Scoring: Scored out of 100. A panel judges runs based on amplitude, execution, difficulty, landings and use of the course.

When?: Men's elimination takes place on Thursday 23 Jan. Both finals take place on Saturday 25 January.

Where?: 1,700ft long course with 290ft vertical drop. Made of rails, boxes and kickers.

Format: Preliminary elimination round in which each rider gets two runs on the course. Eight best progress to the final where riders get three runs. The Women's competition goes straight to the final.

Scoring: Scored out of 100. A panel judges runs based on creativity, trick completion and style of the rider.

Format? Eight snowboarders submit an edit of their riding. Arranged in a randomised bracket, with the winner going through to the final where a winner is chosen.

Scoring: Gold, Silver and Bronze are awarded by a panel of judges. You may vote on your favourite who will win the Fan Favourite Award.
