It’s 4.5mm thick, so great if you want lots of cushioning beneath you when you’re practicing your asana.

MANDUKA EKO YOGA MAT

If you are looking for an eco-friendly mat, Manduka make some of the best around. The Eko mat is made with natural rubber and are completely free for harmful foaming agents found in other mats. The sealed cell surface stops moisture and bacteria seeping into the mat and breeding bacteria, plus it comes in a lovely range of patterns. At 5mm thick, you won’t have to worry about not being cushioned enough from the floor. You can also choose the Eko Lite if you want a slightly thinner mat (4mm).

YOGA DESIGN LAB COMBO MAT
How beautiful is this yoga mat? Yoga Design Lab started in Bali after the owner was tired of seeing the same old looking yoga matters. He wanted to create yoga mats that not only looked good but worked well too. The Combo mat has a non-slip microfibre top layer that’s great for hot yoga practice. It’s also good for the planet as it is made from biodegradable natural tree rubber and water-based inks. You can even wash it in the washing machine. How amazing is that?

Yoga mats can be expensive right? Yoga Mad luckily have created a range of reasonably priced yoga mats including the Warrior Plus. It comes in a vibrant red colour. You just need to wipe it down with a damp cloth after you buy it to make it slip resistant. This particular mat is a cushty 6mm thick, one of the thickest yoga mats on the market. You can get a thinner version which is also cheaper if you prefer.

JADE HARMONY YOGA MAT
People swear by Jade yoga mats as the best yoga mats around. They claim to be the world’s best performing, most environmentally friendly yoga mats. Jade make their yoga mats natural renewable rubber and they plant a tree for every yoga mat sold. If you have a problem with slipping on your yoga mat, you need to try a Jade mat. The open cell natural rubber stays grippy even when wet. Jade yoga mats aren’t cheap but they are worth the price.

LIFORME YOGA MAT
I know plenty of yoga teachers who say their Liforme yoga mat is the best mat they have ever owned. They are made by yogis for yogis with a super grippy material that will stop you slipping around like a seal during your practice. The markings on the mat help with your alignment and the mats are slightly longer than regular mats to give you more space. Liforme yoga mats have good cushioning but they aren’t super thick and squishy like some yoga mats. If you really like feeling the grip of the ground as you practice, then definitely give the Liforme mat a try.

Surfers will love the Suga yoga mat. It is the first yoga mat in the world to be made from recycled wetsuits. How rad is that? Born in California, they have a cradle-to-grave policy which means if your mat ever wears out, they will send you a brand new one, no questions asked.
It currently only comes in black - because that’s what colour most surfing wetsuits are - but they are working on developing a brighter range soon.

EcoYoga have been making environmentally-friendly yoga mats in the UK since 2003. Their mats are made from entirely natural plant based materials - natural rubber and hessian. The hessian feel is different to other yoga mats, but gives amazing grip so you won’t be slipping and sliding all over the place on this mat. It comes in 2mm and 4mm thickness plus 7ft length for taller yogis.

Gaiam make a whole range of lovely yoga mats - from 3mm to 5mm thick - with a whole variety of patterns. The Tree Of Life yoga mat is one of our favourites. It has a textured, non-slip surface and enough cushioning for pointy bones. It is made from PVC but it’s free from six other potentially harmful phthalates. Gaiam also sell other yoga accessories on their website including blocks and straps.
