7 metres in length, with eyes that were 19 centimetres in diameter, this was one giant squid.

“Run to the hills, run for your lives, run to the hills, run for your lives.”

Not our words, the words of headache-inducing metal heads Iron Maiden when they first saw this photo of a giant squid washed up on Kaikoura beach. Don’t read too much into that, they say it all the time. It’s like Bruce Dickinson’s catchphrase, or something.

This monster from the deep, which measured 7 metres from top to tentacles and had eyes that were 19 centimetres in diameter, was discovered yesterday at South Bay in Kaikoura, New Zealand. It was taken immediately to the local Marine Centre and Aquarium, to be kept in a freezer.

For those wanting to take a look at the giant squid, the freezer it’s being stored in has windows so that it can be viewed by members of the public. It’s not like one of those freezers you buy in Currys. It’s a special freezer, for keeping really big squids in.

We don’t want to drive the world into a state of panic, but we have reason to believe that this beast from below was actually on a reconnaissance mission. Expect the giant squid invasion to happen any day now. You read it here, first.
