What Is Underpronation And What Can You Do About It?

Suffering from underpronation? No! It's not a disease. It's all about the way your feet land when running. Here's how to spot it

As every amateur physician knows for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction – Newton’s Third Law innit. So for those runners prone to overpronation, there are those that suffer from underpronation, also known as  the equally wordy, supination.

What is Underpronation?

This happens when the foot impacts upon the ground and the weight of the body isn’t distributed evenly. The outside of the foot and smaller toes bear the brunt causing injury and pain.

  • Underpronation is the number one cause of ankle injuries or sprains
  • It can also cause pain through the arch of the foot or heel pain
  • Sometimes underpronation can also cause back pain and knee pain and in some cases stability may also become impaired because the feet are not hitting the ground in the way they should be
  • Wearing the correct supportive, cushioned running shoes can help correct underpronation

This video from Dr Blake of Healing Sole gives all of that explained in layman’s terms and shows you someone suffering from underpronation so you can easily identify it in yourself.
