Mountain Biking

Here’s What It Looks Like To Hit One Of The Biggest Step Ups In Mountain Bike History

Ballistic bails and balls-out riding... this is mountain biking, exactly as it should be

You know you’re going to be in for a treat when you’re watching a mountain bike edit which opens with spades, pickup trucks and Canadian heavy metal.

That winning trifecta is a solid hint that there’s not going to be a lot of slow-mos to follow, nor a lot of taking it easy or training on the bike, or a whole lot of predictability at all for that matter.

With ‘Pure Darkness 2: The Step Up’, that is exactly the case. Anyone who has seen the first from the series, featured below this paragraph, will know what the guys behind it are all about – the previous instalment literally opens with the devil smashing a computer playing AWOLNATION’s ‘Sail’ with a pitchfork.

The project is all about big hits, heavy riding and defying the clichés which have made many mountain biking edits, well, a little bit mundane and repetitive.

The riders are Matt Macduff, Sam Reynolds, Danny Pace, Blake Samson and Dylan Stone, and this time around, they’ve gone even further than they went in that original madness from back in October. And that’s saying a lot already.

To be specific, round two of the riding bonanza sees the guys team up with the Monster crew and build one the biggest mountain bike step ups that the world has ever seen. Seriously, just have a look at the goddamn thing and you’re likely to need a change of underwear.

If it doesn’t give you nightmares, it’s sure to make you dream… The roll in was 12ft high, and the lip was a full 22ft, built from scratch with a whole load of man power.

The feature alongside the video, which you can read all of here, states: “Last year we filmed the Pure Darkness road trip video because we were tired of watching boring videos filmed totally in slow-mo with predictable music.

“We wanted to make the most awesome video, like the old golden days of freeride, and make it seem like a cool sport again with emphasis on the fun times biking can bring, not lame stuff like ‘training’ and trying to be the best.

“It seemed like you guys enjoyed it so we decided on building the biggest, most badass trick jump of all time. Four days of solid work in sweltering heat and Pure Darkness II – The Step-Up is what we came up with!

“Some of the biggest tricks and crashes of all time went down and when we left we could not have given any more. It was the trip of a lifetime.”

It’s hard to argue with the end results from the trip, that’s for sure, and after you’ve had a watch of the footage up top, we think you’ll agree, it certainly makes for one hell of a watch.
