Whatever your sport of choice is, you know deep inside that it’s always going to come with its risks – no matter what it is. And for many, that’s what makes it so enjoyable.

What isn’t enjoyable though, is when you read about a tragedy in your sport and it actually makes you think about the real dangers involved. That’s why for some, the infographic below from Best Health Care exploring the likelihood of death in any given sport could be rather scary.

“The National Centre for Health Statistics reports the average life expectancy in the United States is 77.9 years,” the poster tells us. “There are so many ways to die early. What follows is a list of activities, from the ordinary to the extraordinary, and your chances of dying from them.”

How very unnerving.

Of course, as with most surveys and infographics, you’ve got to take the information provided with a pinch of salt. We’re told the chances of dying while on a bike are 1 in 140,845 for example – but is this on a road bike, a BMX, a mountain biking or all three disciplines rolled in to one? And is this all-out mountain riding or riding on the roads?

It goes without saying that the dangers involved with the likes of cycling, snowboarding, skiing, scuba diving or pretty much anything else all revolve around the manner in which you do so. If you’re just skiing down the piste, you’re probably going to be alright, but bomb off-piste and drop some cliffs and the chances of danger are inevitably going to heighten.

Anyway, despite the obvious flaws, the team behind this comprehensive inforgraphic have included all of their sources for the poster right at the bottom. And possibly the scariest stat of all? Regardless of what you do, your probability of death during any given year doubles every eight years. Eek.
