Keen Targhee EXP Mid Waterproof Walking Boot | Review

The latest walking boot in Keens Targhee range is leaner and meaner than the original

Have you ever noticed how some walking boots look like they’re trying not to be walking boots? Like they’re trying to be a trail running shoe, or a sandal, or a hat. We’ve noticed this, and it’s not a trend we’re particularly fond of. Thankfully, this accusation could never be laid at the door of the Keen Targhee EXP Mid Waterproof.

You see the Targhee EXP Mid Waterproof, especially when it’s presented in this “dark olive/black olive” colour scheme, has the solid reassuring look of an outdoors walking boot that knows it’s an outdoors walking boot. There’s no pretence or artifice here.

“This update has seen Keen come back to the table with a boot that’s leaner, meaner, and grittier than the original”

Building on the loyal following the Targhee collection has amassed, this update has seen Keen come back to the table with a boot that’s leaner, meaner, and grittier than the original. Sort of like an old school friend, who’s been to the gym and shed a few pounds, the latest model is a mixture of the improved and the comfortingly familiar.

The Keen.Dry waterproof breathable membrane is smart enough to let vapour escape without letting water in – meaning your feet will stay dry without getting stuffy. By bringing performance mesh and leather together, Keen’s Targhee EXP Mid manages to pair up confidence-inducing toughness with a flowy and aerated feel. Right from the word “go”, we reckon you’ll feel at home in these.

One thing that really needs to be emphasised when talking about this boot is how steady you feel on your feet when you’re hiking in them. The TPU heel stabiliser, for example, is a superbly implemented piece of design while the stability shank acts like an invisible crutch underfoot; supporting you in times of need. The dual density compression-molded EVA midsole absorbs impact well and cushions your feet in a way that every hiker will appreciate from minute one on day one.

The Keen Targhee EXP Mid has clearly been designed by hikers, for hikers. It’s tough, stable, trustworthy, and really does look the part.
