OEX Zenon Ultra LT Down Jacket | Review

A warm, windproof layer that can perform and won't break the bank

If you’re looking for affordable outdoor gear that’s going to give you optimum protection from the elements, OEX are a brand you’re going to want to get familiar with. They’re a relatively new name on the outdoor scene with the mantra “explore more, expect more” and they’ve, quite rightly, been turning heads.

Enter stage left the OEX Zenon Ultra LT Down jacket. If you’re looking for a lightweight jacket that’s going to keep you warm, but won’t break the bank, this is definitely worth taking a closer look at. It’s been designed for all kinds of winter activities, from hiking to skiing, being worn as an insulating mid layer. That said, while it’s not waterproof, it would also make for a really good outer layer.

The outer shell is a tough, 7D x 15D ripstop fabric that’s been treated with DWR, which makes light rain bead up and shake off, rather than soak into the material. However, it’s what’s on the inside that makes the OEX Zenon a really special jacket. It’s insulated with 90g of hydrophobic duck down, which is super warm.

This hydrophobic down is able to actively repel water from the jacket, meaning that the down is able to keep its loft and thermal efficiency and in turn keep you feeling comfortable. What more can you ask for? Well, the down is also ethically sourced, so you’ll not only be toasty, but your conscience will also glow proudly.

Being designed predominantly as a mid layer, it’s essential that a jacket like this can also be stowed in your pack when things warm up a little. OEX know this, and all of those lightweight materials mean that the Zenon weighs in at a tiny 217g. The entire jacket is also designed to pack down into its own pocket, which means that it will take up virtually no room when you’ve stashed it in your pack.

So, if you’re looking for a windproof, warm layer that’s going to perform superbly when you need it to, and virtually disappear when you don’t, and all at a price that will leave you with enough money for your train home, the OEX Zenon Ultra LT Down jacket ticks all the boxes.

You’ll find this only at Go Outdoors (in-store or online) and while they sell it at an RRP of £170, if you’ve got a membership card, you’ll be able to purchase it for the excellent price of £130.
