Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket | Review
A lightweight puff jacket from Patagonia that still works wonders in the rain
We don’t imagine that when Eddie Bauer forged the quilted down technology required for his 1936 Skyliner jacket, he quite expected it would end up going quite as mainstream as it did.
These days you can buy puffer jackets from near enough any fashion store on the high street. Take a walk through your city in winter and you’re almost guaranteed to walk past more puffer jackets than you can count on two hands.
What started as a jacket designed purely for use in the outdoor extremes has now become something not unfamiliar on catwalks. Of course, in the time that it’s taken for that to happen, the purpose-built adventure puffer has grown into quite the specimen of clothing as well.
Enter the Patagonia Micro Puff jacket; a puffer specifically built to offer winter warmth without the weight or bulkiness.
“It’s the lightest, most compressible synthetic jacket Patagonia have ever made"
The ultralight nylon shell of the Micro Puff is durable, water resistant, water repellent and windproof. Underneath this, there’s Patagonia’s revolutionary PlumaFill synthetic insulation which is capable of offering the lightweight warmth and compression of down, with the added bonus of being able to perform effectively even when it gets wet.
The Micro Puff has been specifically engineered to ensure that the insulating synthetic fibres stay in place with minimal, but efficient stitching, and there’s careful thought to the trim as well, which has been designed to provide complete freedom of movement during strenuous activities like climbing.
The actual features of the jacket are basic in order to allow the coat to remain lightweight and compressible, but you’ve still got a couple of pockets and a really comfortable hood.
The takeaways of the Micro Puff should be that it’s warm while wet, incredibly compressible, soft to wear with limited cold spots, and able to perform no matter what the conditions. And on top of that it’s the lightest, most compressible synthetic jacket Patagonia have ever made.
A final thing to mention is that Patagonia are a company who have their morals in the right place. They aim to cause no unnecessary harm to the environment through their production, and are constantly implementing solutions, within the industry, to the environmental crisis.
