Rab Zero G Down Jacket Review
An in-depth review of the Rab Zero G down jacket
A key figure in climbing and mountaineering in the 1970s, Carrington started his climbing career in Scotland and went on to make first ascents in the Alps, Himalayas and the Andes. He started the brand Rab in 1980 after moving to Sheffield. He wanted to make hard-wearing, no fuss clothing for the climbing community.
Rab’s heritage has stuck with the brand, and they continue to make some of the best equipment for climbers and mountaineers in the world. His first down jacket called the Andes is still stocked by Rab today.
“This jacket is suitable for expeditions to the coldest environments on the planet."
This latest jacket the Zero G is the “ultimate alpine down jacket", according to Rab. It is one of the most insulated down jackets in the world. Made with high quality European goose feathers, the Zero G jacket has an astonishing 1000fp or fill-power down.
Fill power measures the volume that down can fill up. The idea is you trap the maximum amount of air for warmth inside the minimum amount of material. For example, 1000 fill-power down means one ounce of down would fill up 1000 cubic inches. What all this means in layman’s terms is that this jacket is suitable for expeditions in the coldest environments of the planet.
All Rab down products are Responsible Down Standard certified, so your conscience can rest easy knowing this jacket was made using the highest animal welfare and safety standards.
Rab have also made sure this jacket is super lightweight and durable, ready for climbers who tackle mountains in a fast, lightweight alpine style. The slim fit cut is designed to be worn over baselayers and midlayers. It has an elasticated hem and wrist cuffs so you can easily tuck your gloves inside, plus an insulated zip baffle to keep the wind out.
You wouldn’t wear this jacket to the shops (unless you live in Siberia) but if you need a specialist jacket suited for winter climbing and mountaineering in the world’s harshest conditions then this may well be the one for you.
