Rio 2016 | What is Chris Froome Competing in at the Olympic Games?

Is Chris Froome competing in the road cycling road race and time trial?

Chris Froome is one of the most recognisable men in the world of British cycling – but will he be representing Team GB this year in road cycling at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games? The answer is yes.

Chris Froome will be competing in both the road race and the time trial at the Rio Olympics, but we’ll get to more on that in a minute.

Chris Froome has competed in the Olympics before of course, at the 2012 London Games, where he managed to take bronze in the time trial, behind Sir Bradley Wiggins who would go on to become the first Brit to take the gold in the discipline.

Froome also competed in the road race that year, as part of the team aiming to help Mark Cavendish go for gold alongside Ian Stannard and Wiggins, but as other teams conspired against Cavendish and team GB, it was an unsuccessful attempt.

So, as we mentioned up top, Chris Froome will be representing Team GB in road cycling for both the road race and the time trial this summer in Rio.

The road race is a mass start event, and sees all riders leave the gates at the same time, with the first one to cross the finish line winning the race. As the Olympic road cycling course this year favours climbers, Chris will be a favourite going into the race.

He’ll have the likes of Olympic champs Geraint Thomas and Pete Kennaugh as well as Adam Yates and Ian Stannard to work with on his quest for gold, though should Froome be too exhausted after his attempt to defend the Tour de France crown, it’s possible that he could end up supporting Thomas at the Olympic road race rather than the other way around.

For the time trial, Froome will again be looking for gold, building on his bronze from London, on a course that favours climbers. Team GB have two spots available in the time trial, and it’s more than likely that Chris will be in one of them.
