Red Bull Ultra Natural – Highlights

In 2013, sixteen top international snowboarders gathered at Baldface Lodge on the outskirts of Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, to compete in the Red Bull Ultra Natural snowboarding contest. The highlights are presented to you here in this incredible video.

At the heart of the event is ‘Scary Cherry’, a one mile run which has a gradient of around fifty degrees, not to mention a fearsome reputation. Snowboarders can be forgiven for being afraid of looking down at this one, because when a run is this steep, you end up going very fast, very quickly. Factor in over eighty stunts installed by American snowboarder Travis Rice and his team and, on this occasion at least, the unfavourable weather conditions, and you’ve got one of the world’s most formidable snowboarding challenges. Then again, the Red Bull Ultra Natural was designed to identify the best all round snowboarder out there, so that’s not especially surprising.

What is surprising, however, is the presence of Californian Bryan Fox on the winners’ podium, albeit in third place. 2013 was Bryan’s first year competing at Red Bull Ultra Natural, and he was a late ‘wild card’ addition, so to finish in such a strong position is a remarkable achievement. An honourable mention should also go to Nicolas Müller of Switzerland, who took home the prize for second place, as well as the Best Trick Award in honour of his spectacular mute air above a tree.

But there can only ever be one winner, and on this occasion it was Austrian Gigi Rüf who succeeded in impressing the judges the most with his fluid and hard hitting moves over both natural and man-made obstacles. It’s all been recorded here for posterity, so have a watch and see for yourself.
