Andrew Cotton Rides Wave the Size of Five Story Building

Big wave surfer takes on wave of epic proportions

Ever wondered what it feel like to free fall from a five story window? No? Well neither have we. But one dude who doesn’t need to wonder what it feels like is plumber from North Devon, Andrew Cotton. He just found out first-hand while conquering what is thought to be one of the biggest waves ever surfed.

Known to be one the best big wave surfers on the planet, Cotton is fresh off the plane from his latest exploits in Nazare, Portugal which is home to one of the biggest breaks in the world.

Showing he literally has balls of steel, he dropped in on what has been estimated to be an 80ft wave – the same size approximately as a five story building. The official height will be determined at the Billabong XXL awards. Dubbed the Oscars of the big wave surfing world, the ceremony will take place in spring.

MPORA were lucky enough to steel a quick chat to Cotton as he travelled back to the UK to eagerly awaiting family yesterday: “I’ve never ridden a wave like that one before, there was so much water coming back up the face and the chops were pretty big. Makes you think how far we can push it,” he says. “But for now I better concentrate on getting back to my day job and making a bit of money,” he says laughing.

While Cotton may have crashed back to the reality of blocked drains and pesky pipes for the moment, we have no doubt that we will see him pushing the barriers as to what is possible again very soon and we cannot wait to see what he has in store for us.
