As if triathlons weren't hard enough already without deers jumping out at the participants.

Triathlons, pal. Triathlons ain’t easy. Despite how simple the Brownlees make them look at the Olympics, they’re actually very difficult. Not only do triathletes need to spend large quantities of their time working on their fitness so that their bodies can cope with the stresses and strains of their multi-disciplined sport, they must also have the mental strength to keep going when every inch of them is telling them to stop.

Just ask Shane O’Reilly how tough triathlons can be. O’Reilly was competing in the Dublin city triathlon when a deer came out of nowhere and tackled him clean off his bike. Photographer Erik Scraggs captured the dramatic collision, that left O’Reilly with a shattered helmet and presumably a bit of a headache, as the cyclists made their way through Phoenix Park. Incredibly, the competitor was able to get back on his bike and finish the triathlon in a time of two hours and 25 minutes.
