This Guy Flew To 8000ft Using Only Helium Balloons… Then Burst Them All With A Shotgun

Ever seen the Pixar film ‘Up’? Well Erik Roner just took the idea completely next level...

Who hasn’t thought about getting lifted up in the air by balloons? It’s a question that Nitro Circus star Erik Roner puts forward, and realistically, the answer is probably no one.

Now, this isn’t quite Pixar film ‘Up’ – Erik goes up in a lawn chair rather than bringing his entire house with him – but nevertheless, it’s still a pretty mental thing to do.

It’s also worth remember that ‘Up’ was a cartoon, whereas Erik is actually a real person, which arguably makes his achievement even more impressive than that of the animated character from the award-winning movie.

A lot of people talk about how you’d need something ridiculous like a million balloons to actually achieve this, and there are always stories of people who go missing after trying – one priest was never found again after flying off strapped to 1,000 helium balloons in 2008, for example.

Erik, though, needed only 90 balloons to get his job done. Although he also used a full 50 tanks of helium – which, we suspect, is also the amount Alan Carr must have consumed at some point in his life to make his voice sound so ridiculous.

Anyway, back to the video, and supported by a shotgun, a parachute, Rockstar and a shitload of GoPros, Erik’s ascent was an awesome success. A few of his balloons do start to pop around the 5,000ft mark – which has got to be pretty freakin’ scary – but he continues to climb fast until 8,000ft.

At that point, he notes: “If that’s how much it shakes when one balloon goes, I wonder what’ll happen when it’s all of them,” then proceeding to take out his shotgun and bit by bit blow up the balloons that are keeping him afloat.

The rather comfortable looking daredevil then cuts himself loose and rather quickly descends back downwards, losing track of his chair, but, needless to say, keeping hold of his shotgun.

This video is a very entertaining watch, so sit back, relax – maybe not with 50 tanks of helium strapped to your chair – and enjoy the latest crazy stunt from the wondeful Erik Roner.
