The Excess Issue

December 2016

This month we’re all about excess.

We go skiing with the super rich, or the people that work for them anyway, and feast on juicy stories such as the guest who asked for a set of puppies to be delivered for his children to play with during their stay. But that wasn’t all, the puppies also needed their own nanny and a bedroom to be redecorated for their arrival…

We head to St. Moritz, historically a honeypot for wealth and excess, to see what impression that leaves on visitors there. And we look at heli-skiing and ask whether it can ever be worth the expense?

Back in the realm of mortals, we ride the Haute Route in the Italian Dolomites, one of the most excessively hard amateur races on the planet. And interview the reformed crack addict and ultra runner Charlie Engel, for his perspective on taking things, be they drugs or fitness, to the extreme.

We chase monster waves with big waves surfers in Nazare.

And then we switch to the other end of the spectrum by looking at the simple pleasures of a bushcraft course, and ask what we can learn from that in this season of turbo-indulgence.

These stories and more will be dropping throughout December.
