Giant-Alpecin Mechanic Taken to Hospital After Being Trapped Under Etixx-QuickStep Car in Tour of Flanders

...he was later taken to hospital but is said to be "okay"

There was chaos at the Tour of Flanders over the weekend after a road cycling mechanic became trapped under the front of an Etixx-Quickstep car while riders lay crashed at the side of the road.

The incident happened after the car was trying to squeeze past the collision which had taken place early on in the Tour stage.

In amongst all the mayhem, Ed Bekhuis, the Giant-Alpecin mechanic, was on his way to help out one of the riders on his team who had gone down.

Somehow, whoever was behind the wheel of the Etixx-Quickstep car appeared not to see Ed, who was walking away from the car, and then didn’t realise the precarious position he was in after causing him to fall over.

As Bekhuis struggles on the ground, the car can be seen to pause but not completely stop in its tracks as the mechanic waves frantically for the driver to reverse.

Though Giant-Alpecin staff confirmed to Cycling Weekly that Bekhuis “should be okay”, he was required to go to hospital for a check up.

The Tour of Flanders was won by World Champion Peter Sagan, and Brit sensation Lizzie Armitstead took the women’s title.

Sagan held off a strong effort from Fabian Cancellara, who was racing the event for the final time, and Sep Vanmarcke over the final kilometres.

“It’s very hard to work with other guys, because nobody wants to work with me. It’s always better to drop everybody, I think,” said Sagan, who won by 25 seconds from Cancellara. “I’m very happy for this. I want to have fun after this big victory.”
