This Skier Persuaded Cops He Was On His Way To The Olympics… And Escaped A Drink Driving Conviction

Will this Kiwi skier have the same luck in Pyeongchang?

Nick Rapley in Breckenridge, Colarado

A New Zealand born freestyle skier found a bizarre way to avoid a drink driving charge. The 20 year old Wanaka native was discharged without conviction after the defence counsel argued on his behalf that any sentence would destroy his dream of competing at the Winter Olympic Games in 2018.

The New Zealand Herald reports that Free Skier Nicolas George Rapley was stopped by a local police patrol shortly after leaving a drinking establishment, and recorded a breath alcohol level of 826mcg (whatever that means).

However, when the case got to court, the defence successfully argued that a conviction would reduce their client’s chances of being able to enter Canada, where he was set to be practicing for qualifiers or the Winter games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Despite avoiding conviction, Rapley was still disqualified from driving for seven months, and ordered to pay $600 prosecution costs and $130 court costs.

It goes without saying that Mpora.com in no way endorse drink driving or any other criminal activity.
