To most skiers and snowboarders, the legendary Canadian resort of Whistler probably needs little introduction.

Its 200+ groomed trails, spread over the twin peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb have not only welcomed hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers over the years, they’ve also hosted the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (in 2010).

“Whistler’s legendary backcountry has probably featured in more ski and snowboard movies than any other terrain in the world”

Meanwhile its legendary backcountry has probably featured in more ski and snowboard movies than any other terrain in the world.

It has a long history of world firsts: It was the site of the first ever summer ski and snowboard camp, the Camp of Champions, which has been running for an incredible 28 years – or as they like to put it, “since before it was cool”.

From pros to families, Whistler has something for everyone. Photo: Whistler

Whistler was also one of the first resorts to allow snowboarders on the lifts and as such played a crucial role in the development of the North American snowboard scene.

Riders like Devun Walsh, JF Pelchatt and DCP all honed their craft here and freeskiing pioneers like the late, great Shane McConkey called it home.

One of the key reasons it’s proved so popular with everyone – from top pros to holidaying families – down the years is the sheer variety of terrain on offer, with everything from high alpine steeps to gladed tree runs. There really is something for everyone.

The snow parks are among the best in the world, but it’s certainly not all gnar – the beginner slopes are excellent and the ski school is second to none.

Its probably spawned more snow trends than any other place on earth – whether that’s new tricks being pioneered, new tech being tested or simply new fashion styles being showcased on the slopes, Whistler always seems to set the agenda.

Combine that with one of the best apres scenes anywhere in the world, and it’s little wonder that the resort is going into its landmark 50th anniversary year in rude health.

And of course, as you’d expect from such a place, it will be celebrating in style, with events throughout the winter season. Not only that, but with El Nino looking like it’s going to be as big as it’s ever been this year, it looks like the 50th anniversary season could be a bumper winter for snow.

They’re currently offering a special rate to British skiers and snowboarders who book before August 31st, so if you’ve ever wanted to visit, now’s the time to get booking!
