7 Terrifying Shark Attack Near-Misses

Just when you thought it was safe to get back into the water...

Over the weekend pro surfer Mick Fanning made a near-miraculous escape after he was attacked by a shark at the J-Bay Open competition in South Africa.

As the event was being live streamed, the entire incident was caught on TV and the resulting videos have been sending the internet into melt-down mode ever since.

Shark attacks of course aren’t that common, and it’s even less common that they’re caught on video. But Fanning’s isn’t the only one that has been.

Here are six more terrifying shark attack near misses…

1) South African Attacked By Two Great Whites

This story is absolutely mental…

Shannon Ainslie was 15-years-old when he was out surfing Nanoon Reef in East London, South Africa.

He was attacked by not one but TWO 15ft Great White sharks, who grabbed him by the hand and dragged him under water. Yet he manages to survive.

Watch the video above to see how he manages to escape!

2) Great White Busts Into A Shark Cage

I’ve always thought cage diving with Great Whites was a dumb idea.

Waving some raw meat around to get them properly bloodthirsty and then dangle a bunch of humans in a cage in front of them…. You’re asking for trouble.

When the sharks breaks through the cage walls….. Holy. Shit. There’s a reason why this video has 19 MILLION views.

3) The Mad Hueys Close Call With A Tiger Shark

They don’t call themselves The Mad Hueys for nothing.

These Aussie madmen decided to go paddling about in shark-infested waters with a bird cage, instead of a shark cage. Y’know…. just for jokes.

You’ll have to watch the rest to yourself to see what goes down…

4) National Geographic Cameraman Gets Nipped

It’s never a good idea to try and catch a shark to attach a camera to its back.

Cute little penguins, baby turtles and seals – yes.

An angry shark with a hook wedged in its mouth – no.

But this is exactly what the National Geographic crew try to do. They hook the shark’s mouth to keep it still while they fix the camera.

Pissed off and bleeding, it breaks free from their grasp. So camera man Nick Caloyianis decides to follow it. Bad decision…

5) Great White Circles A SUPer

It’s a calm, sunny day. You’re out on a stand-up paddle board. You spot a Great White shark circling beneath you. What do you do? Definitely not stay put.

Oh wait, that’s exactly what this ballsy guy does. Using the GoPro attached to the end of his paddle, he films the shark perusing the waters around him…

Chilling stuff. You can practically hear the Jaws music in the background.

6) Man Fends Shark Off With… A Pencil?

I can actually understand why the shark is pissed off in this video.

The diver has swum down to kidnap a lionfish. Apparently they’re bad for the reef, but the reef shark doesn’t know this. This badass beast decides he’s having none of it and tail whips him.

This panics the diver who starts trying to defend himself with what looks like a pencil.

OK, it’s not a pencil. It’s a diving tool but man, that shark is not pleased….

7) Spear Fisherman Comes Face To Face With A Great White

Eugene van Wyngaardt was out spear fishing over Deep Pinnacles reef in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Suddenly he spotted a Great White just feet from where he was swimming.

I would been pooing my pants if I accidentally came across a razor-toothed predator like this one. Luckily, Eugene’s got a big sharp pokey stick to protect himself…..
