Terrifying Head Cam Footage Shows How Helmet Saved Mountain Biker’s Life

Warning: Video features unconscious rider and is not a pleasant watch

The debate over whether a helmet really matters or makes a difference or not is something that’s more confined to the roads than the trails.

Mountain biking is dangerous, and you generally won’t find many regular riders going up in the hills without a helmet. They could just save your life one day, and the frankly quite terrifying video below shows exactly that.

The footage shows a rider flying over his handlebars after taking on a jump and being knocked unconscious in the Surrey Hills in England. Tim Rowsell, a rider waiting at the side of the trails is quickly there to help and tells the friends to call 999 immediately.

The rider in question, Andrew wakes up after a scarily-long time spent unconscious. The 44-year-old states that he doesn’t remember what happened and complains about some light head pain. It’s then revealed that the rider’s helmet took a lot of the damage.

The head cam video was sent into Eagle Radio by Tim, and thankfully Andrew was taken to hospital where he fully recovered. He went back to work a couple of days later.

We need to warn you at this point that the footage really is not pleasant to watch. It’s frightening to see what can happen when it all goes wrong. Andrew is in some serious distress and he’s lucky that he was able to eventually get the all clear.

Speaking about his footage and why he sent it in, Tim said: “It doesn’t take much to get quite a severe head injury and that’s why I want people to see it. If you wear a helmet it can save your life and I genuinely believe that he would have been in a lot worse a state if he hadn’t been wearing a helmet at the time.

“He was incredibly lucky and you can see at the end of the video that the helmet took the main impact and really was quite badly damaged. It was an old helmet, which he hadn’t used for a couple of years, but it did the job.”

It’s really scary to watch this scene unravel, as it could happen to any one of us in some manner or another, but it’s great to know that riders like Tim are out there waiting to help – and that a helmet could just save your life.
