Staying warm while camping in winter is a combination of many factors. A sleeping bag is, of course, key. But so is the mat you are using. In fact, it’s perhaps the most important thing. This is the part that will keep you off the cold ground, and it’s important that you choose your mattress in exactly the same way you would a sleeping bag: examining the suitability of the seasons.
The Synmat Hyperlite is described by Exped as “the world’s lightest mat at its warmth and comfort levels”. It certainly is impressively light at only 360g including the stuff sack, plus it packs down incredibly small. To keep it so small and light, Exped have tapered the bottom of the mat but not at the expense of comfort.
It’s especially impressive when you consider that there are two layers of synthetic insulation in the mat itself to make it suitable for three seasons and has a rating down to – 6 degrees C (although if we were expecting that temperature, we’d probably go for one of the heftier mats in their range).
