This Canadian Man Built A $17,000 Custom “Fat Bike” And Is Going To Ride It Across Antarctica

It might look ridiculous, but this bike is going to take Hank Van Weelden on the journey of a lifetime.

One man. One dream. One seriously weird looking bike.

Hank Van Weelden is Canadian. He’s a 50 year old dude, from Edmonton, and he’s built himself one of the gnarliest custom jobs we’ve ever seen. Why has he done this, exactly? He’s done it because he wants to be the first person ever to ride a bike from the South Pole to the Antarctic coast.

Van Weelden has spent $17,000 putting this thing together for the epic 750 mile journey, and I mean…just look at it. It’s an absolute beast; the end boss in a yet unmade video game where you have to beat up increasingly scary bikes.

There have been people who’ve adventure cycled from the coast to the pole before, but Van Weelden will be the first person in history to do things this way round.

The bike was designed and built in collaboration with custom bike builder Davis Carver (who owns and runs Carver Bikes in Woolwich, Maine), and just look at it. There’s no denying that this bike is a million miles away from your standard fresh-off-the-rack-from-Halfords type bike.

The bike has a titanium frame, holding down 5.5inch wide wheels. It’s also got an 18-speed internal hub, to help Van Weelden boss the white plains of the world’s coldest continent. There’s also a compass on the handlebars, and a solid tow-bar and sled out back (allowing Hank to transport all his essentials).
