Mountain Equipment Super Couloir Glove | Review

A proper mountain glove, the Super Couloir will make an excellent addition to your winter wardrobe

A solid pair of gloves are often an overlooked essential when you’re in the mountains. Opting to take those slightly battered, 15-year-old gloves you bought from a supermarket during a cold snap is a mistake you’ll only make once. Given your hands are essential in just about everything you do on and off the mountain, investing in a glove that’s going to keep them protected is the smart thing to do. And good mountain gloves don’t get much better than the Super Couloir glove by Mountain Equipment.

Mountain Equipment have been making top-level outdoor clothing and gear since the early 1960s, and it counts the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and British Mountain Guides among its partners, so you know a glove bearing their name is going to be on point.

“…these gloves are made by people who really understand being out in the mountains”

So, what makes the Super Couloir Glove one of the best mountain gloves around? Put simply, it does everything you want a glove to do, and does it superbly. The Gore-Tex inserts mean that your hands are going to stay dry while you’re wearing them, and given wet hands equal cold hands and cold hands can lead to frostbite, keeping dry is rather important if you’re heading high in winter.

The Gore-Tex membrane, while durable enough in itself, gets extra protection from a tough, ultra hard-wearing goatskin which makes up the leather lap of the Super Couloir glove. When you’re doing serious mountain climbing in all conditions, you’ll be using a lot of rope, and this tough goatskin palm will hold up to masses of abuse. Again, it’s also water resistant so you’ll stay dry and warm.

While they’re as durable as a tank on the outside, on the inside things get a lot cosier. There’s a micro fleece lining on the palm of the hand, and a fibre pile lining on the back of your hand. Soft and warm, these are going to keep you very comfortable, which translates to being out on the mountain for longer, which is kind of the point anyway, isn’t it?

Throw in touches that show these gloves are made by people who really understand being out in the mountains, such as karabiner carry loops, pre-curved finger and thumb design for a more ergonomic fit, and even a little patch of suede for soothing that runny nose in the cold, and the Super Couloir gloves by Mountain Equipment will quickly become the first thing you pack when the mercury drops.
