Mammut Nordwand Advanced HS Hooded Jacket | Review

A serious jacket from Mammut built for the worst the weather can put you through

If you didn’t quite get it from the hint in the name, you can tell from the moment you look at Mammut’s Nordwand Advanced hardshell hoody that the product is specifically built for serious use in the great outdoors.

‘Nordwand’ is the German for ‘North Face’, referring of course to the north face of the Eiger (rather than to Mammut’s rival brand), which at 1800m is the highest north face in the Alps and one of the most revered challenges in the world of rock climbing.

The Nordwand Jacket was designed and modified in collaboration with Mammut’s sponsored climbers – the people who break the records and live outdoors – so it’s been put through the most rigorous tests you can imagine, and there isn’t any detail missed in the design.

“No matter what the conditions throw at you when you’re wearing this, you know they won’t be getting through…”

Because of that you know right off the bat that it provides all the obvious things. The top-level, 3-layer Gore-Tex construction is waterproof, windproof and breathable to the extreme, and it’s ultra durable as well.

The jacket is made, as Mammut put it, with “particular attention paid to ensuring that each product fits like a second skin and adapts perfectly to athletes’ typical movements in any situation”. This means that it’s designed with the movements of mountaineers in mind, with extra tough fabric at areas exposed to abrasion and articulated arms to aid movement, increase comfort and reduce friction.

The ventilation options are numerous and the quality hood not only holds a helmet easily and has a stiff peak, but it’s easy to tighten and loosen at will even if you’re wearing gloves. There’s also a deep chest pocket and the coat is, as you would expect from the name, built to be compatible with a climbing harness.

This is a product made with alpine expeditions in mind, made for those who are going to be getting out ski touring, mountaineering or ice climbing this winter, and made for those who settle for nothing short of the best. Take the Nordwand Advanced with you when you head outside in the colder seasons, and you know that you’ll be wearing a jacket right on the cutting edge.
