After pulling America out of The Paris Agreement and enacting US oil company bailouts, it’s no secret that the Trump administration has been something of a wrecking ball when it comes to climate change. No, that’s an understatement actually. Trump’s been a one man demolition team in the worst way possible, and a relentless nuisance for those fighting the good fight against climate change. With Comrade Cheetolini sitting as the ‘leader of the free world’, anyone looking to make truly positive systemic change happen really has faced even more of an uphill battle.
All is not lost though, as two super heavyweights in the outdoor industry – Patagonia and Columbia Sportswear – have joined forces in the fight against climate change and more specifically, in the fight against Donald.
“Trump’s been a one man demolition team in the worst way possible”
On 24th April, the two companies – who both have a reputation for fighting back against environmental legislation regress – filed an ‘amicus brief’ lawsuit, a document that advises the court of additional considerations to take into account during a pending case.
In this case, the brief asks the court to weigh up the damaging impact the decision to to overturn the 2015 Clean Power Plan (CPP) and replace it with the weaker Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule – a rule which, according to the brief, “fails to fulfil the Agency’s statutory mandate to reduce harmful greenhouse gas pollutants.”
This clear regression back to a rule that favours the dying and unsustainable US coal industry will have a huge impact on the US outdoor industry, which is currently sitting healthy at $887 billion.
