An all-new binding for the 20/21 winter season, the Plum Oazo 8 sits in the middle of their ultra-light breed of ski touring bindings, between the R170 and Pika. It’s another binding that looks to find the middle ground between a race binding and traditional tech bindings. And the results? That’s a binding that barely tips the scales at 200 grams per binding.

Plum Oazo 8 Build

As with all Plum ski touring bindings, the Oazo 8 is milled out of a single piece of 7075 aluminium. This construction technique has long been tested, and sometimes broken, in the high alpine surrounding the Plum factory in Cluses. And, after all these years of R&D, it seems like Plum has cracked the construction code with this technique, creating some of the most dependable bindings on the market.

As you can see with the Oazo, this binding has been given the old nip/tuck treatment from the gang in Cluses. Wherever possible, weight has been shaved off the binding without affecting the performance.

This slimming isn’t really at the expense of features, either. The Oazo has all the features we’ve come to expect from modern tech bindings. First up is the ‘Too Facile’ easy step in system which, thanks to well-positioned toe wings and snappy toe springs, makes for an extremely stress-free step in force at the toe end of the binding.

Turning to the heel, Plum has looked to make this heel as slim, but still as feature-packed, as possible. It’s sporting 20 mm of adjustment, that’s enough for around three different boot sizes. A wider base place for the heel can be purchased separately, for more adjustment and a wider mount point.

The U-shaped heel pin offers a lateral release of 4 to 10 while, being a race-inspired design, the vertical release is locked to 8. Nothing surprising there given simplicity is the name of the game here.

Who Is The Plum Oazo 8 For?

In an effort to bridge the gap between the lightweight race bindings and mid-weight traditional bindings, Plum has made a pair of extremely versatile touring bindings in the Oazo 8. Those of you looking to shave a few hundred grams off your setup won’t notice too much of a dip in performance in going for the Oazo.

Saying that, given the narrow screw pattern of these bindings, the Oazo 8 is best suited to be drilled onto lightweight touring skis to avoid the binding ripping off a wider pair of planks. Pair these with an extremely lightweight ski, like the Black Diamond Cirque 78 or Blizzard Zero G 85, and you’ve got the tools to keep you moving lightning fast in the mountains.
