MORE INFO

A pair of socks is a pair of socks… right? Well, not quite. There’s no point going out spending hundreds of pounds of your hard-earned cash on a pair of ski boots if you’re going to stuff your feet into a pair of tattered ski socks. A decent fitting pair of socks are going to transform the comfort levels of your ski boots, and your general comfort while you’re out skiing around the mountains. One of our favourite ever sock companies (yes, we’re that sad) is Vermont based Darn Tough socks.

Fabrics and Features

What are the ingredients for a good pair of socks then? Darn Tough have gone for a 60% nylon, 35% merino and 5% lycra mix. This combination creates a performance fit (thanks to the nylon and lycra) that resists slipping and bunching together while your feet are working hard to pressure your ski boots.

“A decent fitting pair of socks are going to transform the comfort levels of your ski boots”

Next up is the merino which, if you’re unaware, works wonders thanks to its natural ability to move heat and moisture from your foot. This, in turn, helps to keep your feet warm and dry even during extremely cold spells.

Aside from all that material goodness baked into these socks, the Pennant sock also houses some handy features to help keep your foot feeling its best while stuffed into ski boots. This list of features includes multi zone mesh panelling, which works to improve venting and flexibility as well as reducing bulk and pressure points.

“You can sleep easy knowing the socks aren’t going to fail you, whether it’s your first day or hundredth day skiing in them”

On the subject of support, the Pennant sock features a reinforced achilles area; with further support stretching across your arch and instep. Not only does this provide some much needed fatigue-fighting support, but it also helps the sock retain its shape and structure around your foot. This support means you can sleep easy knowing the socks aren’t going to fail you, whether it’s your first day or hundredth day skiing in them (we recommend frequent washing).

Just a quick note about the fit, given the low cushioning these socks are sporting, they’re going to be ideally suited towards skiers who are skiing with proper-fitting ski boots. If you’ve got a bit too much room in your liner then you might find them a touch on the thin side and should perhaps look towards a sock with a little extra cushioning. Or, alternatively, just go and get some well-fitted ski boots.
