Introduced in 2019, the Skorpius ski touring boot from La Sportiva replaced Sportiva’s old Spitfire boot in their lightweight ski mountaineering category. Now for the 22/23 winter season, La Sportiva brings in the expertise from innovative buckle experts BOA, to allow for fine adjustment to the shell’s closure. 

Build

It’s fair to say that the Italian boot designers over at La Sportiva like to come up with creative ways of solving the ski / walk mode lever problem. The Spitfire approached it with an upside down lever that attached at the top, to save the lever from getting packed out with snow.

The Skorpius CR also features a really interesting setup that means the ski / hike lever rotates to the side (instead of flipping up and down) to activate, and deactivate, the modes. This saves the lever from potential damage against rocks when you’re bootpacking.

Aside from the ski / hike mechanism, the shell has been produced using a neat bio-based Pebax Rnew shell that’s been reinforced with carbon fibre; providing a great balance of smooth flex, responsiveness and low weight.

We’ve already mentioned the BOA dial closure, but we think it’s worthy of its own paragraph. Not only does the BOA close up the instep section, sucking the heel back into the heel pocket, but it also tightens up the shell around the forefoot. The precise tuning of BOA means that you’re really able to dial in (sorry) the fit of the boot in the area the BOA covers, making for a nicely customisable fit.

Buckling down the upper cuff is made possible through a large buckled powerstrap that can be easily released for efficient ski touring transitions, while another thinner powerstrap ensures the cuff and liner remains close to your calf.

Other build features include a handy Pebax 3D flex tongue that’s been designed to ensure a good level of range of motion (ROM) is upheld – in the case of the Skorpius CR II, you’ve got a brilliant 68 degrees of ROM.

Who Is The La Sportiva Skorpius CR II For?

Yes, coming in at a weight of 1,220g, the boots don’t meet that holy grail of 1kg ski mountaineering boots. But what you get with the Sportiva Skorpius ST is an extremely capable downhill boot, both for the ups and downs, that you’ll be thankful for if you’re driving heavier skis or out in tricky conditions.
