Last week, a Norwegian girl spent three nights and four days lost in the Whistler backcountry – and miraculously survived.
20 year old Julie Abrahamsen followed a group of skiers out of bounds off the Whistler resort last Wednesday. She quickly lost the group ahead of her and found herself completely alone in the backcountry.
She wasn’t reported missing until Friday afternoon. Luckily by Saturday, rescue search team found her on Wedge Mountain, a few miles outside the resort boundaries.
“She never once feared for her life…”
The big question is: how did she survive? Well, according to the Global News report, she had packed pasta for her lunch that Wednesday and managed to ration it out over the three days she was lost.
She trekked five kilometres through the snow trying to find her way back. At night, she survived by sleeping under rocks and trees.
When the rescue team found her, she was still a good two day walk from civilisation. According to Global News, she never once feared for her life. Apart from some frostbite on her fingers and a few bruises, she was amazingly unscathed.
Julie’s tale is a pretty strong word of warning to all backcountry riders. Make sure you are prepared when you head out of resort and always go with a riding buddy. Otherwise things could end up a lot worse.
