The 10 Best James Bond Action Sports Chases Of All Time

We celebrate the release of Spectre by picking our favourite chase scenes

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know there’s a new James Bond movie out today. It’s called Spectre and two of the big action sequences take place in the Austrian Tirol, more specifically the ski resorts of Sölden in the Oetztal valley and Obertilliach in East Tirol.

Bond loves a good action sports chase, almost as much as he loves implausible female double agents and ridiculous corporate cars that no one has driven since the 1980s, so we thought we’d round up his 10 best ever chases…

1) Surfing in Die Another Day

Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama and Darrick Doerner were the pro surfers standing in for 007, in this film played by Pierce Brosnan. The opening sequence was filmed at Jaws, with the shore shots taken at Cadiz in Spain and our very own Newquay, according to Surfer Today.

2) Snowboarding in A View To A Kill

The movie otherwise best known for Grace Jone’s awesomeness also saw 007, this time Roger Moore, in a white parka-clad snowboard getaway. It was filmed in Switzerland and Iceland and is worth a watch for the water slide at the end alone. Well actually just for that really.

3) Skiing in The World Is Not Enough

Brosnan again, this time skiing in the Caus Caus Mountains, which were actually in real life Chamonix. During filming an actual avalanche hit Le Tour in Chamonix and the Bond crew went to help with the rescue efforts.

4) Parkour in Casino Royale

Daniel Craig’s first Bond movie saw the famous freerunner and early Parkour founder Seb Foucan star as the baddie Mollaka. The crane leap from this sequence is often said to be the greatest Bond stunt of all time.

5) Bungee Jumping in Golden Eye

A jaw-dropping dive off the Verzasca Dam in Switzerland started up Pierce Brosnan’s first Bond movie. Tourists now flock there to recreate that most dramatic of opening stunts.

6) The Cello Chase from The Living Daylights

One of the strangest chases in Bond history sees Timothy Dalton start the sequence in a snow car chase but finish it burning down the mountain in the cello chase of his current misses. Erm…

7) Skiing in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

George Lazenby bossing it in a blue onesie. What’s not to love? The ski action was shot in Murren in Switzerland and you can visit the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant, which served as Blofeld’s research institute, for a spot of lunch.

8) Speedboat chase in The World Is Not Enough

The Thames isn’t normally the most exciting of rivers, unless you kayak down it, but Brosnan turns that assumption on its head in this high speed river chase, that’s actually not geographically accurate but since when did that get in the way of a Bond chase sequence.

9) Skiing in The Spy Who Loved Me

Worth a watch for the yellow one-piece and funky-laced 70s soundtrack alone, 007, aka Roger Moore, is skiing St Moritz, though the cliff jump was filmed on Baffin Island in Canada.

10) Motorbiking in Tomorrow Never Dies

Daniel Craig rides up stairs, over rooftops, and through a bazaar, in this not massively likely opening sequence.

We couldn’t list James Bond action sequences without a hat tip to the late and great freeskier Shane McConkey for his Spy Why Loved Me parody from Seven Sunny Days. Enjoy!
