1) iTrailMap 3D

This app lets you see yourself on a 3D mountain, record your tracks, as well as vert and distance and upload them to the web.

One of the best things is that it doesn’t require constant wifi or data, very handy for people who spend their days way out of range! Once the map is downloaded, you can access it offline on your phone and save changes to be uploaded later!

3) NOAA Ocean Buoys

One for the nature nerds out there, this app allows you to track and retrieve weather data and tide predictions straight from NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center.

While many surfer’s apps carry out a similar function, this app takes out any of the fluff and sticks to the technical. Super straight forward and so helpful.

4) Camping Cookbook And Meal Planner

Tell this app how many days you’re away camping and number of campers, and this app sorts the rest out for you.

You can generate shopping and equipment lists for essential and tailor your meals around taste and price, it even has sections such as ‘ideal recipes for a boat.’

Pretty hilarious, but lets be honest, pretty handy for when you’re on a boat!

7) GoPro

If you have a GoPro, this app is super handy.

Control your camera remotely from your smartphone to adjust camera settings anf frame the scene using live preview. Once you’ve capture the shot you can share it directly to social media through the app.

You’re Instagram will suddenly look a million times more professional…

8) Accu Weather

We’ve all been caught halfway up a trail before when the heavens open unexpectedly and our goretex boughts suddenly seem to forget how to do their job.

This app is basically your best friend, working in real time, you can check with certainty whether to call it a day at the next pub or go for another five miles.

No more soppy feet and getting caught in thunderstorm at the highest peak of your hike!

9) Spyglass

When we saw this ‘compass app’ we wondered why anyone would need a compass in the days of accurate GPS- then we had a proper lok at everything Spyglass does.

Working as binoculars, a heads-up display, milspec compass with maps, gyrocompass, tactical GPS receiver, waypoint tracker, speedometer, altimeter, Sun, Moon and star finder, gyro horizon, rangefinder, coordinate converter, sextant, inclinometer, angular calculator and camera… it’s pretty much everything you could want to navigate your way around your adventure….pretty rad.

11) Bush Craft Skills

It’s not the snazziest looking app, but it is a wealth of knowledge on bushcraft survival skills.

Choose the subject you’re interested in and then browse through guides, articles from experts and quictips all in one place.

12) Magic Seaweed

A necessity for all committed surfers. Magic Seaweed is the gospel for wave and swell tracking.

Not only giving wave, wind and surf reports, the app is also connected to the many magic seaweed webcams all over the world so you can have a good look yourself at conditions.

Surfers, you 100 per cent need this app.

13) Orux Maps

This mapping app is designed especially for outdoor sports such as running, treking, mountain bike and paragliding.

You can share your postion with friends for safety and map your routes, as well as connecting the app to GPS bluetooth, heart rate monitors and bluetooth Zephyr.

14) RealSki

Real Ski is a lot of fun to play with.

Allowing you to scan your surroundings through your phone’s camera, it picks up the names of chairlifts, restaurants and runs in view, layered on top of the real time image.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work in resorts outside of North America at the moment, but its development team are working on it as we speak!
