The Telegraph Outdoor, Adventure & Travel Show Coming to London’s ExCel

The man who recreated Shackleton's journey is among this year's speakers

The UK’s largest adventure show is coming to London next month, promising adventure themed stalls, experiences and a fascinating line-up of public speakers.

The Telegraph Outdoor, Adventure & Travel Show will take over London’s ExCel Centre from February 11th to 14th. Tickets are available on their website or you can enter the competition at the bottom of this page for your chance to win one of five pairs of tickets.

Over the course of the weekend visitors will get a chance to hear from some of the UK and indeed the world’s foremost adventurers and explorers.

 

Top of the billing is British scientist and adventurer Tim Jarvis. Jarvis made a name for himself emulating the incredible journeys of a bygone era – using the kit and clothing that expeditions would have had available to them in the heroic age of polar exploration.

In 2007 he hauled a sledge for nearly 500 kilometres across the ice of Antarctica following in the footsteps of the early 20th century Australian explorer Douglas Mawson – the man whose skin fell off.

“I got to know members of his family,” Jarvis told Mpora when we interviewed him recently. “I wanted to do it to find out what had happened on his original journey where he was the sole survivor, and he’d been accused by many of cannibalising the second fallen man”

In 2013, Jarvis and a team recreated perhaps the most incredible adventure of all, sailing more than 1,000 kilometres across the Southern Ocean from Elephant Island in Antarctica to South Georgia in an exact replica of the tiny open boat that had carried Ernest Shackleton and his crew on the same incredible journey nearly 100 years before.

Jarvis will be talking about these two trips and also his latest project, the 25Zero initiative aimed at raising awareness of climate change. Keep your eyes peeled for our full-length interview with Tim – and the full story of these incredible adventures – dropping in March.

Alongside Tim Jarvis, the Telegraph Show will also host talks by Jacki Hill-Murphy, a Brit who gave up a teaching job to retrace the journey of a pioneering female explorer through the Amazon jungle, Mark Beaumont, who broke the Guinness record for cycling round the world in 2008, Levison Wood, star of the recent TV Series Walking the Nile and a whole host of others.
