These Guys Are Building A Skateboard Half-Pipe In An Iconic Sky Scraper

Skateboarding in a sky scraper will 'transcend barriers of race, class, and culture' apparently

Imagine the scene: a flock of skateboarders migrating across one of the most iconic cities in the United States, all headed towards one building.

Depending on your perspective on skateboarders, it either sounds like something fun is happening, or The Walking Dead has been remade, with the zombies being replaced by people in rolled up jeans and five-panel hats.

But this isn’t fiction, this is reality. Or, at least it will be.

The iconic Fisher building in Detroit is going to have a fully working mini-ramp (they’re calling it a halfpipe, but we’re definitely going mini-ramp) built in it’s lobby, for the public to go and skate in early April this year.

Furthermore, it’s not just a pretty unique place to do your rock-fakies. The whole project is designed to unite all people. Ambitious.

“Skateboarding, transcend barriers of race, class, and culture,”

In the words of curators of the event, brand consultancy company Everard Findlay, “Fisher Halfpipe explores the idea of the commons, and the way that certain sports, such as skateboarding, transcend barriers of race, class, and culture to draw disparate groups into community.”. Quite.

Is there a spot in your town you’d just love to skate? Is there a building that could be improved by the addition of a mini-ramp or a bowl? Let us know.
