26 Times Steve Peat Proved He’s a Proper Mountain Bike Legend

Here are just some of the times the legend went 100% Steve Peat...

You’ll have heard the news by now. The one and only Steve Peat has announced that the 2016 mountain bike season will be his last on the downhill World Cup circuit.

The Sheffield rider is the definition of the word ‘legend’ in the world of mountain biking, and in the UK and beyond he’s had more impact on the sport than you can possibly measure.

You’ve probably watched the announcement video by now – if not, it’s in the list below, and will probably bring you to tears – so, what better time to remember some of the greatest moments from Peaty and recap why we love him so…

1) When He Beat Nicolas Vouilloz at Les Gets, France in 1999 and started a famous rivalry

… and the commentary notes: “Steve Peat, as a Yorkshireman, celebrates with something other than champagne,” as Peaty downs a beer at the top of the podium.

2) When we remember his style from way back in the day… Mint

3) When he went on a pub crawl in Ireland with Hans Rey

4) When we watch this section from Sprung Two, 1998

5) When he drunk beers that (those) time (times)

6) When he went 100% Peaty and risked going all out to beat Fabien Barel and Nicolas Vouilloz in Les Gets in 2002, and won, despite only needing a few more points to win the World Cup overall title

7) When he won the World Cup overall in 2004… again, then crashed out and made everyone cry in World Champs, having come second on three previous occasions…

8) When he inspired the world to go get wasted in New World Disorder 3

9)  When we picked up Dirt Magazine and saw any one of his amazing covers

…and you can check out EVERY cover of Dirt Magazine featuring Steve Peat right here.

10) When he won the ’05 Fort William World Cup

A day, a result and an atmosphere that many people will never forget.

11) When he finally… FINALLY won the World Champs in 2009 in Canberra, Australia at 35 years old, beating Greg Minnaar by 0.05 seconds, and the world lost their minds

A day and a result that many call the greatest in mountain biking!

12) When you saw him at a World Cup race and he was a top bloke and had a chat (bound to have happened)

13) When His World Champs Win Inspired This

14) When he got us super stoked forever for winter time in Britain

15) When he did a PinkBike ‘Ask Me Anything’ and gave these answers

…You can read the rest of the ‘Ask Me Anything’ on PinkBike here!

16) When he started This is Peaty in 2012

17) When he let Ratboy take over ‘This is Peaty’ for episode 5 of season 2

“In five years time that little f*cker better have won the World Championships. That’s all I’m saying…”

18) When ‘Won’t Back Down’ dropped in 2013

“When I first started out in this sport it was all about having fun, playing with mates, with a bit of racing thrown in. Nothing has changed.”

19) When he taught us how to win

20) When he became the winningest rider in downhill World Cup history after taking his 17th win in Vallnord in 2009

21) …and reacted like this when Santa Cruz Syndicate teammate Greg Minnaar beat that record

22) When he showed he’d never change with these epic mini-bikes

23) When he got a star on the Sheffield Walk of Fame

24) When he inspired video titles like this

25) When he announced he was retiring from World Cup racing… in style

26) When you realise he’s 41 years old and is now gearing up for his 23th consecutive season
