Who doesn’t love a good road trip? Whether it’s just you, the road, and your vintage Pontiac Firebird, or you’re in the back of your Granddad’s piss smelling 1987 Cortina on the way to Rhyl, there’s a universal love of hitting the road.
The trouble is, everybody’s different. For some, the ideal road trip would take in nothing but wide open spaces, and nature at it’s untouched finest. For others, nothing other than the majesty of urban sprawl should feature crop up during your days on the road.
But fear not! American computer boffin Randy S. Olson has worked out what he claims is the greatest European road trip.
The 16,287 mile trip takes in 45 locations around the continent and, thanks to some clever computer algorithm that was originally designed for the most efficient way of completing Where’s Waldo (nee. Wally) puzzles – no, really – this is supposedly the most efficient route.
The clever path doesn’t just take the least amount of time, however, It also ensures that your journey will keep the scenery mixed up, not staying in one location for too long, keeping everybody you’re sharing the journey with happy. It’s also designed so that you can start the journey at any point, and still get the same experience.
Taking an estimated 14 days to complete, the epic road trip will take in:
- Innsbruck, Austria
- Munich, Germany
- Pag, Croatia
- Venice, Italy
- Tuscany, Italy

Like you, we’re baffled as to why neither Wolverhampton, Hull, or Runcorn made the cut. But fear not, map is only a suggestion. After all, what’s the point of embracing the freedom of the road, and then being confined to a map?
We got our hands on the algorithm, and ran it asking to pinpoint Europe’s premier scooter spots. Looks like a pretty different.
