Freediving UK | Where In The UK Should You Go Freediving?

Can you freedive in the UK? Where to freedive in the ocean and where to look for the best freediving UK courses...

Freediving in the UK and learning to freedive in the UK is not as difficult as you would imagine.

Even if you don’t live near the coast, there are many different freediving clubs within cities and towns. This is the only kind of diving that can be practiced in any standard 25m swimming pool.

Freediving can be a confusing sport. There are many different disciplines within the sport as well as many different types of water in which divers choose to freedive, dependent on personal preference.

Most freediving competitions are held in the ocean, away from the UK, however there are competitions within the UK within quarries and other non-open waters.

Freediving UK – Ocean Diving

Deep, clear and still waters are the best conditions for freediving and for this reason, the UK is not known for being a great sport for open water, ocean freediving.

If you want to try open water diving in the UK however, head to Cornwall. FreeDiveUK run open water courses and dives in the waters around Lusty Glaze and Newquay Beach.

For the best ocean freediving conditions however, head to Thailand, Australia and Bali.

Those oceans are the perfect conditions and their reefs are known to be a great spot for spotting many different types of wildlife.

Alternative Freediving In The UK

A great deal of Freedivers in the UK choose to dive in alternative waters to The Atlantic ocean.  Lakes, Quarries and even man made centers can provide better conditions and depths than many UK open water spots.

UK quarries are a great destination for divers, with  many of the best found in Wales.

Dorothea quarry in North Wales provides the deepest fives in the UK, at 40 metres and Vivian quarry in Llanberis is a good depth for AIDA 2* courses.

Elsewhere in the UK, popular quarries include Capernwray quarry in the Lake District, and sports around Birmingham Chepstow and Consiton.

Best Courses In The UK

While getting in the water and giving it a go is super easy in this sport, anyone who fancies their hand at freediving UK should consider a introductory course.

“It’s an incredibly easy thing to get into and a very tempting thing to get into it without doing a course because its not like scuba, the way you have to have a certificate to hire a tank,” says head of FreediveUK, Ian Donald.

“The temptation to do it without a course is really strong. Most people probably do a bit of it without a course.”

“If people have got it in their heads that they want to freedive however, they need to do a course just to stay safe.”

Freedivers go to places such as Thailand and Bali for extensive coral diving
