A few things may pop into your mind when you hear the words ‘giant squid’. You may think of the 2009 Hollywood banger ‘Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus‘, or you may think of the endless calamari you could harness from such a creature.
After seeing the photos and the footage of the beast that these fisherman in Japan caught though, we’re betting that you’re overriding emotion will either be disgust, wonder, or just plain fear.
The monster squid was three and a half metres long – twice the height of your average human male – and just in case you’re wondering, it’s certainly not a one of a kind.
The monster squid in question was three and a half metres long – approximately twice the height of your average human male…
Sightings of these beasts have been on the rise in Japan recently, possibly because the Fukushima nuclear power plant is dumping a shitload of waste into the waters, driving the squids nearer the surface and subsequently nearer to the fishermen’s nets.
It should be noted, though, that the guys who caught this did seem to try save the squid. They put it in a closed pool, but for a number of reasons this didn’t quite do the job, and it went on to die.
Hopefully this doesn’t become too regular occurrence over in Japan, but we can tell you one thing for sure – we won’t be going out for a fresh water swim over there anytime soon…
