Surfing may soon become a fully fledged Olympic sport. It looks set to follow in the footsteps of freestyle skiing and snowboarding as an action sports that are crossing over into the mainstream via the Olympics.
Surfing could be included in the Olympic program by the times the five ringed circus rolls into the Tokyo, Japan in the summer of 2020.
The announcement was made last week at the annual Surf Summit in Mexico, an event where the surf industry gets together and discusses the issues that impact on the entirety of surfing as a whole.
Speak at the conference, former Quiksilver Executive Chairman Bob McNight said:
“Forty-eight hours ago I received an email from the Tokyo 2020 organising committee inviting surfing and few other sports to apply to qualify to be in Tokyo.
I showed the Japanese some of the wave pools two weeks ago in Sochi and their eyes were like two sunny side up eggs, so it’s coming.”
