Back in July when surfer Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark in South Africa’s J Bay in the final live broadcast, the images went around the world.
Unsurprisingly perhaps, the lineup at one of the best point breaks in the world remained considerably emptier than usual for a few months afterwards.
“When Slater first went near the site of Fanning’s attack, he saw no sharks. This time it was a different story.”
Of course, the incident didn’t stop people heading there altogether, and in fact Kelly Slater filmed this epic clip just a short while after the contest convoy had moved on. At that point, he saw no sharks.
But when he returned to the vicinity of the attack more recently, it was a different story…
“I thought it felt a little #Sharky this day,” he wrote on Instagram. Deciding to wait for his buddy Grant “Twiggy” Baker before paddling out.
Twiggy, a local, replied: “It’s what I like to call the sharkiest wave in the world.”
And he’s not wrong. Apparently this was one of two sharks to pop up and breach the water during Kelly and Twiggy’s session. Perhaps the animals wanted to join in with the world’s best?
