It doesn’t take long to work out where the party is at in Val Thorens. A couple of chairlifts in and you’ll hear the unmistakable sounds of saxophone, champagne, students and regret that could only be coming from La Folie Douce.
People travel from the world over to clumsily climb onto crowded wooden tables at the après palace, dance with folk dressed in Primark onsies in front of spectacular views, and have a good piss-up in amongst the ‘sweet madness’ on stage.
But now, travellers to the world’s highest party may be left disappointed after the Val Thorens branch of the venue issued a statement saying that they are going to have to tone down their parties – for the next month at least.
The statement comes on the back of a recent party which had “a sad turn out”, with “too many people getting too drunk” and several revellers having to exit the party in an ambulance.
Sources suggest that a fight broke out between Swedish and Danish visitors at the party with disastrous results, and subsequently, tourists have been temporarily banned from attending the Val Thorens venue on lifts without skis, and guest DJ performances at the spot have had been cancelled.
The statement in full from the La Folie Douce Val Thorens page reads:
“Until further notice, we are obliged to cancel all events implying guest DJs at our venue. Coming up to Folie Douce on the lifts without skis has also been forbidden by the SETAM until March.
“Last week’s party had a sad turn out, too many people got too drunk, it was plain ugly: this is not what Folie Douce is about. We do our best to offer you the highest quality music, we work hard to keep the venue beautiful with respect to the nature that surrounds us, our staff and security strive to keep you safe and satisfied, that is what we are about, this is Folie Douce. Good music, beauty and great vibes. We want that every person leaves with the sensation that they had the best time of their lives, not the nightmare of leaving in an ambulance.
“So out of respect to our staff, our artists and most of all yourselves, we expect YOU to come to our venue with the same attitude.”
It’s always a shame when a few drunkards ruin it for the rest of us. Everyone knows Folie Douce is a pretty crazy party, but the whole point is that you ski down after – not leave in an ambulance headed for the emergency room.
Don’t worry too much if you’re heading out to Val T in March though, because it looks like access will be back to usual by then. Just make sure that the only thing you regret after being up there is your terrible dance moves…
