Marcelo Gutierrez Villegas rides as raw and true as anyone out there on the downhill World Cup series. He’s exciting on a mountain bike.

The 25-year-old five-time national Colombian champ flew to a sixth overall ranking in the UCI charts for 2015, with numerous top 10 finishes along the way including a fifth at World Champs and third at both Mont Sainte Anne and Fort William.

Previously known as much for his urban downhill as his time on the dirt, it’s safe to say Marcelo has become a fan’s favourite on the mainstream tour now, but that doesn’t mean he still can’t shred underground – literally.

For Marcelo’s latest video release he’s been given the full Red Bull treatment; brought to a ridiculous location you’ve never heard of before and left to shred on tape for the world to watch.

The setting in question is Zipaquira, a town close to the capital of Bogota in the rider’s native Colombia. What was so special about it? Well, it’s the first downhill track ever to start in the fresh air of the trails and end up underground – finishing in La Catedral de Sal, a spectacular cathedral carved out of salt beneath the hills.

One of the most recognisable tourist attraction in Colombia, and one of cultural and religious significance, the cathedral also happens to make for a top shred spot – and the line Marcelo rides makes for one hell of a watch.


And before you ask, yes, when you lick the walls of a salt cathedral it does indeed taste of salt. Trust us on that one.
