Earlier this year, Canadian skateboarders TJ Rogers and Ryan Decenzo found one of the most stunning locations ever used for a skate film – this abandoned hotel complex on the coast of Nova Scotia.
The slightly creepy-looking complex, reminiscent of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining, was originally designed as a luxury coastal spa resort.
But two years after construction began in 1991, the financiers went bust, leaving the building in its current half-completed state. Although it’s changed hands several times since, it’s basically been left to rot for 22 years.
This is obviously not good news for the owners – who’d apparently invested $20 million in it before they went under – it’s great news for skateboarders.
The multi storey, 131 room complex boasts over 175,000 square feet of smooth, skateable concrete – effectively making it one massive skate park.
As well as the existing elements, Ryan, TJ and their sponsors at Red Bull decided to rope in legendary skatepark builders the Zenga Brothers to add to the complex.
They came up with a whole load more crazy features, most of which they made out of materials that were lying around the abandoned site including air ducts and bits of plywood.
Ryan and TJ then invited a select crew of skaters to come and ride the thing, including Joey Brezinski, Cody Lockwood, Nate Lacoste, Sam Schuster and Pat Moore.
The resulting video is nothing short of epic – but is it just us that finds the whole idea of an abandoned hotel in the middle of nowhere a little bit creepy?
