Imagine a bike lock that could warn you if someone was trying to steal your bike? What about one that unlocks automatically when you – and you alone – are standing near it?

Now imagine that the same lock could alert your friends, loved ones and even call the emergency services after a crash? Well, these American tech innovators have built it.

Imagine a bike lock that could warn you if someone was trying to steal your bike?

They call it the Skylock and they sound pretty confident that it’s going to take over the world.

The 21cm x 15cm lock, which ways fractionally over 1kg, has a built in bluetooth antenna and wireless capability which connects it to your phone.

If someone attempts to move your bike while it’s locked up, a motion sensor detects the movement and sends you an alert.

Similarly, if you have a crash with the lock attached to your bike the motion sensor will detect it and ask if you want to call for help.

It can automatically use your phone to call “anyone in your trusted network” or even the emergency services.

The lock also has a proximity sensor, which means you don’t even need to get your phone out of your pocket to open it.

Although if you run out of phone battery, there’s also a code pad.

The makers claim the lock itself will never run out of battery, thanks to its built in solar panel. Sound a bit too good to be true? Well it is.

For the moment at least.

The lock won’t actually be available until summer 2015, although you can pre-order one now.

Assuming it all works as it’s supposed to, we’re pretty excited to see how the lock goes down with real life cyclists.

Shit, it might even be successful enough to justify the unbearable smugness of the presenter in their promotional video…
