Watch A Man Fly Around New York’s Statue Of Liberty With The “World’s Only Real Jetpack”

You'll believe a man can fly...with the aid of a jetpack.

“Start spreading the news, we’re leaving today…on the world’s only real jetpack, New York, New York.” If Frank Sinatra was alive today, and still making music about the world’s biggest apple, there’s a good chance that the lyrics to one of his most famous songs ever would have been extremely different (especially if he’d recorded it sometime in the last week).

David Mayman, president of Jetpack Aviation and inventor of the JB-9 jetpack, is the man taking his jetpack for a spin in this video (see below). The footage shows David flying across the Hudson River and loitering around the Statue of Liberty like a human-sized wasp…from the future. It’s a genuinely awesome watch, one that will make your spirit soar.

David claims this jetpack is the only “real” jetpack in the world. He argues that it’s the only one lightweight enough to be worn on the back easily, also pointing out that it’s jet-engine powered and runs on kerosene. The fact that it’s capable of vertical landings and takeoff is another aspect of the pack that David is particularly proud of.

The jetpack is capable of 10 minutes worth of flight time, and a vertical climbing speed of between 500 and 1,000 feet per minute. The jetpack is reported to have a maximum altitude of 10,000 feet. Of course, it doesn’t take a Professor of Mathematics to work out that flying to a height of 10,000 feet, at a maximum ascent speed of 1,000 feet per minute, is a surefire way to die when your vehicle can only fly for 10 minutes at a time.

The horizontal flying speed of this thing, if you’re interested, is a face-melting 62mph. Incredibly, David is hoping that the next model will be able to go twice as fast. If you’re reading this, Father Christmas, we’d be more than happy to open one of these jetpacks on December 25th.
