Watch: Mark Beaumont Rides 500 Stunning Miles in the Scottish Highlands… in 37 Hours

Record-breaking adventurer drops stunning North Coast 500 feature

The North Coast 500 has been dubbed ‘Scotland’s Route 66’ in the past, one of the best journeys in the world when it comes to challenges, scenery and all round experience.

The journey takes in over 500 miles of Scottish beauty, following main roads across the coastal edges of the Northern Highlands and passing through the likes of Durness, John O’Groats and Inverness, where it starts and ends.

The recommended road cycling route for the NH500 takes nine days, with ranges spanning from 45 to 76 miles in a day. It can be demanding at times, but it’s definitely accessible for the everyday cyclist.

What isn’t so accessible to the everyday cyclist is doing what Mark Beaumont just did; completing all 517.7 miles of the NH500, climbing 10,462m, non-stop in 37 hours 56 mins. That’s including four punctures and a few pit-stops for those all-important peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

Mark isn’t exactly a cycling punter of course. He hit the spotlight way back in 2008 when he broke the Guinness World Record an 18,000 miles bike race around the world in 82 days. Earlier this year, he also managed to take 18 days off the record for the 6750 mile journey from Cairo to Cape Town, cycling at 160 miles per day.

Still, he’s heralded his latest feat in the Scottish highlands as “one of the toughest challenges I have ever experienced,” and when Mark says that, you know he’s not kidding. Have a watch of the awesome feature below:

If you’re after more awesome features from Mark Beaumont, look no further. We caught up with Mark late last year, had a chat with him – read the Mark Beaumont interview here – and even got the chance to film this awesome ‘Live for Adventure’ edit with Mark.

Mark is one hell of an inspirational guy, that’s for sure. His best lesson of all? The toughest part of any long journey is getting started. Once you’re in it, it’s not so bad.
