Road cyclists have some serious style these days. Sir Bradley Wiggins has made sure of that, becoming renowned for his retro ‘Mod’ look which has set him apart from the rest of the two-wheeled world.

And now it looks like Chris Froome is trying to follow in Wiggo’s footsteps and bag himself a cult fashion following – either that or he’s having a mid-life crisis, because if you’ve been paying attention to the Tour de France closely in the past week, you’ll have noticed the Englishman has been riding with a nose ring.

Kind of.

The accessory is actually called ‘The Turbine’, and it isn’t so much Chris going punk or trying to get back at his overly-strict parents, it’s actually a device intended to dilate the nostrils, increase the airflow through the nose and allow the rider to breathe a little cleaner.

It’s said that while a massive 70 percent of breathing is done through the nose while at rest, but that that falls to a mere 30 percent while exercising.

Rhinomed, the company behind The Turbine claim that the nasal airflow of the wearer can be increased by as much to 38 percent during use, and if that turns out to be true, it’d be a surprise not to see ever rider on the Tour sporting one of these teched-up nose rings.

Froome himself has actually been using the device for a while now, first plugging it in his nostrils for the Vuelta a Espana last year, and seeing as he is the man with the yellow jersey right now, there’s nothing to suggest the science behind it doesn’t hold up.

Plus, let’s face it, road cycling could do with being a little more punk.
