Today is a good day for BMX fans. Monster Energy are now releasing the segments from the stunning Above Below, their feature-length BMX film out last year, with all of the parts from the movie set to drop over the next six months.
The film made waves for good reason when it first came out. It’s rammed with bangers, but it also shows the other side of the sport – the times when you need to bribe security while you’re riding or the frustrations involved when you can’t quite stick a trick.
The first part to drop is that of Liverpudlian rider Ben Lewis though, and it shows what happens when everything goes exactly to plan.
We caught up with Ben when the movie first came out, and it was interesting to hear him talk about what goes on behind the scenes.
“To make a video isn’t just point and click,” he said. “You take each trick as it comes, and it might take three or four hours to get it or you might get kicked out by security four or five times. It’s not as simple as many people might think.
“You might have been trying something for ages and you might’ve been close, but then you’ll see the police or the security coming and you know you’ve only got one chance left.
“You give it 250 percent when that happens and more often than not it works on that go. When it doesn’t though, it tends to crash really fucking badly!”
There’s not many crashes in this final feature though. Have a watch of the mind-blowing edit and it’ll leave you dying to get back on your bike…
