Hanwag Tatra GTX Hiking Boot Review

Bavarian company Hanwag are manufacturers of exceptional, long-lasting boots and have been making quality products since 1921. In their illustrious history, Hanwag have produced the first ski leather boots for the Winter Olympics, became one of the first German manufacturers to make trekking boots and even launched the first boots made especially for paragliders.

So far, so distinguished, but what about their walking boots? Well, Hanwag make a very wide range of footwear from full mountaineering boots to approach shoes. The Tatra GTX is one of the flagship boots from their trekking range.

“The shoe’s chassis remains very stable, with a deep tread on the sole for gripping on rocky paths or scree-ridden moraines.”

Even on first inspection it’s obvious that these are an extremely durable boot, and if they’re well looked after they should last a lifetime. The upper is made from Nubuck, and as a matter of course Hanwag try to reduce the seams wherever possible to alleviate as many pressure points as possible. There’s a durable Gore-Tex lining inside the boot.

The soft leather cuff around the ankle offers protection, while the shoe’s chassis remains very stable, with a deep tread on the sole for gripping on rocky paths or scree-ridden moraines. Rubber heel and toe cap protection adds to the durability of the boot. The lacing system is is also excellent, with a good hook at the ankle which allows the boot to be tightened and clamped.

After long days on the trail with a heavy backpack, our testers found these boots felt sturdy and steady, but also comfortable – with some good shock absorbance in the heels and mid-soles.

The roll of the shoe was also very natural feeling. Finally, the great thing about these boots is that they come in a variety of fits: narrow, standard, wide and bunion, yep, bunion in case, you know, you suffer from bunions.

These European-made are boots to cherish, to look after and to go walking in for a very long time.
