Lowe Alpine AirZone Pro 35:45 Backpack Review

We all know that feeling of having a backpack strapped on while hiking or cycling. It can be itchy, sweaty and make you feel uncomfortable, right?

Lowe Alpine have come up with a backpack that offers one of the best ventilation systems around. It is called the AirZone Pro. The AirZone Pro is made with a tight mesh which lifts the backpack away from your back, allowing air to flow freely and keep you cool for when you’re hiking or biking great distances. Lowe Alpine have also left a cut-out space in the back panel for even greater breathability.

The brand has been making high-quality backpacks for the outdoors since the very beginning. Founded in 1967 by climbers Greg and Jeff Lowe, they created an innovative version of the early internal framed backpack in Colorado, USA. Since then they have pushed backpack design to new boundaries, creating the innovative bags we see today.

Lowe Alpine understand the importance of comfort when you are on a long-distance expedition, whether it’s hiking, climbing or bikepacking. They have created a system called the Centro adjust which allows you to easily adjust the back fit while you are on the road, plus the hipbelt gives extra comfort when you are carrying a heavy load.

Some backpacks have entry access points in the bottom, Lowe Alpine have chosen to put an extra entry panel in the side of the AirZone Pro, so you can grab your gear from the main compartment without having to tip everything out. There’s also a handy sleeve for your hydration pouch, so you can drink on the move.

The AirZone Pro featured here is a 35 litre bag, however the top section adjusts so you can carry an extra 10 litres of equipment. Lowe Alpine also make a 45 litre version which expands to 55 litres. Other features include the AdaptiveFit hip belt (which is slightly different on the women’s specific version of this backpack, to ensure it fits well) and the waterproof cover which will keep the whole bag dry during downpours.

Of all the inanimate objects you take with you on trips to the great mountains and forests of the world, it’s perhaps the backpack that you become most attached to and not just because it spends most of its time attached to you.

A great backpack has a life, it journeys with you, it’s in all the photographs. One member of the Outdoor 100 team has a Lowe Alpine rucksack that travelled around the world with him 20 years ago. It’s a bit worse for wear but he just can’t let it go. This latest model from Lowe Alpine has that same quality to it. Here’s to the next 20 years.
